Carpal tunnel syndrome v/s Cubital tunnel syndrome

In today’s world, hands related nerve conditions have become very common due to continuous scrolling on the phone, typing and more. When we think of it, the first thing that comes into the mind is Carpal tunnel syndrome and Cubital tunnel syndrome. These are conditions caused by nerve compression which causes weakness, pain and discomfort. Let’s understand the difference between the two .

Carpal tunnel syndrome affects the median nerve passing through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. Whereas Cubital tunnel syndrome affects the ulnar nerve which passes through the Cubital tunnel which is present on the inner side of the elbow. Both start from the compression of the nerve but the reasons differ.

Carpal tunnel syndrome :

  • Repetitive hand movement
  • Prolonged wrist position
  • Diabetes
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Pregnancy

Cubital tunnel syndrome :

  • prolonged bending of the elbow
  • Putting pressure on the elbow for too long
  • Injury or trauma
  • Arthritis
  • Fractures
  • Dislocations

Both the syndrome shows quite the same symptoms and signs but have some unique twist to it such as :

Carpal tunnel syndrome :

  • Numbness and tingling in thunk, index, middle and part of the ring finger
  • Weak grip
  • Pain
  • symptoms worsens at night

Cubital tunnel syndrome :

  • Numbness and tingling in the ring and little fingers
  • Weakness in hand grip
  • Pain near the inner elbow
  • Hand clumsiness

Carpal tunnel syndrome and Cubital tunnel syndrome might have some similarities however they have unique differences. They have different sources of pain and discomfort. It is necessary to detect the conditions early and get it treated as soon as possible. If you notice any signs, consult a professional.
