Understanding Epidural Hematoma (EDH) : its impact on brain trauma

Epidural Hematoma (EDH) is a life threatening condition which occurs when the blood gets collected between the skull and the dura mater, a membrane covering the brain. It is known to be the leading cause of death worldwide. This can be a result of trauma which tears the meningeal arteries, veins or rural sinuses.

Causes :

  • penetrating injuries such as gunshot wounds
  • iatrogenic causes such as Cranial surgery
  • blunt force injuries such as accidents or sports injuries

Symptoms :

  • severe headache
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • confusion
  • numbness
  • seizures
  • fixed and dilated pupils
  • loss of consciousness

Preventive measures :

  • use protective gears
  • implement safety measures
  • Raise awareness about the dangers of head trauma

Epidural Hematoma (EDH) has a high impact on your brains. Without the right treatment and care the expanding Hematoma leads to brain herniation, which is a life threatening condition where the brain tissue is displaced due to intracranial pressure. However with on time surgery and treatment, patients might experience full recovery.

Epidural Hematoma is a reminder of how fragile our brain is when it's affected by trauma. By understanding the causes and symptoms, one can be aware of it and take early action.
